A great-great aunt, Christina Lensing, gave her place of birth as
Grossburlo, Westphalia. I know where Burlo, Westphalia was and as far as I
can tell that is where she was born, so what does "gross" mean in this
context.

'Gross' means big, large and 'Klein' means little.
I think in former times there have been two small villages close
together, near each other. One of these villages was called
'Gross-Burlo' the other one was called 'Klein-Burlo'. Now they have
unified and the name of the unified village is Burlo. - Or one of
the villages has disappeared and the other one is now Burlo.
